Lipid altering medications are a special collection of drugs which helps to reduce the progress of atherosclerotic wounds and reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. It also works to lower the flow of unnecessary or harmful lipids such as LDL cholesterol in the blood stream. Then again these medications help to increase the levels of beneficial lipids such as HDL cholesterol in your blood stream.
Generally there are five groups of lipid altering medications available in the market. The five lipid altering medications include statins, anion-exchange resins, fibrates, nicotinic acids and fish oils.
- Statins are the most effective and commonly used drug to lower the LDL. It significantly reduces the risks related to heart attack and stroke.
- Fibrates are most dynamic drug which helps in lowering triglycerides but it also reduce LDL. Fibrates will elevate good cholesterol (HDL).
- Nicotinic acid is also known as Niacin which helps to lower both the LDL and triglycerides.
- Anion-exchange resins are used in lowering the LDL. They can worsen triglycerides and are recommended to treat HIV-linked high lipids.
- Fish oils contains high amount of omega 3 which helps to reduce triglycerides but often exacerbates cholesterol levels. This lipid-altering medication is believed as a weak treatment.
Apart from these medications, there are so many natural foods available to reduce lipid levels. Exercise also helps to lower LDL levels.
